As you can see we are moving right along with the new faucets and the
new wall board installed in the main bathroom.
Sanding was completed by me and is ready for the next phase. We
priced tile and decided at this time we are going to go with a new tub
surround instead.
It isn't the tile that is so expensive but all the options like the
inset soap dish and corner round pieces, etc.. It is Just not cost
effective to do the tile for this bathroom at this time. |

The sun was out this Saturday so we went garage sale
hunting again. Got a great deal on a Ryobi table top band saw,
Dremel 4"circular saw, and table top belt sander all for $60 dollars.
At another sale we bought two large framed paintings of eagles for $2
dollars apiece. Expect to turn them around for about $15 to $20 a
piece. I will keep you posted.
Looks like I finally have a
buyer on my free dresser and nite stands Should be gone tonight.
Late note: SOLD them finally. Goes to show you there is a
buyer for everything if you are patient. There is a navy
detachment at Travis Air Force Base and a 2nd class Petty Officers
purchased them. Yes....of course he got a break on the price being
military.
|
|
We have another busy week ahead of us with trying to
complete the bathroom (s) remodeling, preparing our income tax forms,
seeing a financial advisor, and getting a crown put on for my tooth that
broke a couple weeks back. So lets see who is making money this
month, me the tax man or the dentist. LOL
Are you ever supposed to get ahead?
|
 |
Well I already spent some of my earned craigslist money
and purchased two solid oak two drawer night stands $10 each and two
lamps $5 each. What an incredible deal. A Japanese family is
moving back to Japan and selling everything for almost nothing.
See I told you that million was going to be slow coming. |

I got another good work out this morning. 25 minutes on the
recumbent bike and 10 minutes on the rubber pull cords. This is a
picture of our exercise closet with different size rubber pull cords
located at different pull points. It strategic location encourages
you to use them. The trick is to ensure the door is closed/latched
solid prior to use.
Inappropriately named, "coming out of the closet" Notice
the kozi's hanging on the door knob. You can heat or cool these
and use them on sore muscles.

So are we having fun yet. My bathtub guy did not like my sissy
sanding job so he critiqued me good and put me back to work to do more
masculine work. Uhhhhh uhhh uhh.......notice the big (Tim the
tool man) sander. I was completely enclosed inside the tub with my
funky outfit and got it right this time. Tim (his name believe it
or not) came by and gave his blessing and then added some more texture
to give some of the rough spots there due smoother finish. Now
I get to do some more light sanding in two more days. Monday the
tub surround goes up.

 |

Yup, that is actually sweat on my shirt |
|
Dental appointment went well so now I have another crown
in my head.
I don't feel like a king (get it.....Crown), but you know what they
say.......
Once a King always a king, but once a knight is enough.
|
I took a nice walk this evening.
The resident cooks soft food dinner after my dental work was
outstanding. Had a tomato, tuna, grilled cheese sandwich with
soup. Talk about flavor. WOW!
Sold a magazine table lamp for 100% profit. Got several contacts
going on some other items I have listed on craigslist. We will see
how that goes.
|

Mar 5, 2009
Life is grand. Today I sold one of our extra chairs and someone is
picking up the other one on Saturday. We are now $100 to the plus for today. Funds
are going into the vacation account. I may have missed my calling.
We have been discussing how to title items in the craigslist ad's to get
the best attention from buyers. It actually can get funny when you
read some of the ad's people submit. One that is catchy is "for
sale" -- "Bye me" -- or "you have to have this." It is just to get
you curious enough to open the ad to see what it is. Helen
recommended for my eagle pictures to say "man room pictures".
Open to suggestions......

First and foremost congratulations to my daughter on her new job offer
at PSNS. Oh ya, by the way my daughter thinks I look funny in
shorts and black socks so I am showing her in the picture to your right
that I do own white socks also.
Did I say shorts? Along with a short sleeve shirt for at least the
next 3-4 days in the forecast.
Today I cut, edged, and fertilized the front yard. I then cleaned
all the sprinkler heads and activated the override on the water
manifolds to ensure they still operated from the winter layup. We
are in great shape here and I am ready to go into auto in the front. Over
the next couple days I will work in the backyard in between sanding the
tub walls for the final bathtub enclosure
installation on Monday.
My neighbor acquired my dad's old lawn edger when he passed away.
When they moved last month they gave it to me. Found out why they
were so generous. It is old, and that is all I will say on that
subject.

Mar 9,2009
Good weekend for all I hope. Nothing we did was rocket scientist
this past weekend. Tinkered around the yard and edged the
neighbors yard since my travel trailer would make it difficult for her
to edge her lawn next to it. When I parked it we had a good
neighbor discussion so it is not an issue, I just felt I would rather
take care of this and keep in her good graces. That is the right
thing to do on my part. We took a nice ride
yesterday and ended up at Nimbus damn and fish hatchery. Got out
and did some walking. It is a bit scary when you are at the bottom
of a damn and look way up at the spillways, especially when they post a
very large sign that says if the lights and horn sound you have 5
minutes to clear the area. Of course with the water levels so low
in the lakes that is not likely to happen in the near future.
There were a couple fisherman trying there luck for some salmon.
|
 |
I got a good buy on this Trek bicycle $25 so now I can get some more
exercise. The seat kept lowering as I was riding, so a quick fix
needed here. When I go riding then the wife also goes riding.
We thought about a recumbent bike for her but believe we are going to
see if we can find a nice 3-wheel geared bike for her. They have
lots, like miles of paved bike trails along the Sacramento river we
would enjoy hitting together on.
Helmets are not required for adults in Calif.,but I do have a
craigslist one coming next week brand new for $10 still in the box.
Thought you were going to see me in spandex, not
|
 |
|
Big day today. Hopefully final work on both
bathrooms will be completed. I will be happy if we just get the
main bathroom shower operational. We are expecting guests within
the next couple weeks and it would be nice to have all the work done.
Tub enclosure is taking longer than anticipated with the walls being off
square just enough to have to manipulate the panels to fit properly.
The contractor wants the glue to set up for 48 hours and then I need to
caulk all the seams. One of his picky time lines is adding an extra two
days for the drying of the glue and caulk is to ensure good adhesion
prior to using shower.
|
Mar 10,2009
I bought a bunch of redwood fencing boards and 2x4's to try my luck at
building planter boxes for my vegetable garden. That along with
other designated areas in the yard we should be in great shape for fresh
veggies. I bought a gliding rocker and ottoman for $15 dollars
with the intent of putting a new cover on the ottoman to match our
furniture for our use and reselling the rocker for minimum of $15.00.
You just can't find ottomans on craigslist separate from other furniture
so we are trying to beat the system.

Mar 13, 2009
I knew it was going to happen. I got that call.....that dreaded
call......you know the one that says "can you come to work for me"......ouch
My painter friend got behind schedule and asked for my help. I
figured it was just some easy grunt work, but to my surprise she put my
butt right to work painting inside vanities, caulking kitchen cabinet
doors, and hanging protective paper for her to continue painting.
Kitchen cabinets are going to be what they call, distressed painting.
I believe I used muscles that I have not used in awhile. No time
to complain because I get to do this again today.
NOW LISTEN UP----- If you think this is a high paying job, with
benefits, and easy work you better not retire if you still feel you have
to continue working. Thankfully I don't, and will only do this to
help out occasionally.
|
|
Master bath is now 90% complete |
I did a test run on the backyard sprinklers. There are four
stations in back and one is giving me fits. Time to call my experienced
brother for help.
|
Have a great day and don't let the full moon or Friday the 13th
influence you. Myself I will not be walking under any
painter ladders today.
Have a great day and enjoy life. |
Mar 14, Aother great day at garage sales
Wheel barrow $5, Chair $3, Ottoman $2, and not showing a
brand new still in the box hugger ceiling fan $7 to replace the ugly on
in the kitchen.
TV stand $20, finally found one that fits our TV and decor
|
I was looking at this 21 speed bike at a garage sale and the guy said I will
accept any offer I just don't want to put it away ever again. So I
offered him $15 dollars, he took it, so I took it.
I made a friend today with a neighborhood teenage boy. He has been helping
me around the property and was mentioning to me his bicycle had crapped
out. You should have seen his face light up when I gave it to him. It felt
good helping a good kid that appreciated it.

Mar 19
Just a short update to let you know I am still alive and kicking.
I have been putting in some very aggressive physical type days helping
my friend the painter. She is very much a quality and
detailed person when it comes to her work.
We are getting along great considering that I don't like to paint, I am
lots older and set in my ways, male, and I feel that if the paint covers
the item it is good enough. We laugh, then move through my issues,
and get the work done. Actually I have to say I am enjoying this
work but wish my body could defray some of the ache's. Mainly the hands and
back. Fortunately the work does change from painting, papering,
sanding, installation of doors, drawers, and cabinets. Did I
mention cleaning up is part of the job? So the body parts that are sore from
yesterday are healing as the next group gets a work out.
With all that said the Shipyard did wonders in my training over the
years. EEO would be very very proud of me. I have a lady
boss and a Mexican co-worker. C/!06 would also
be super proud of me as I do my ergonomic exercises before starting work
and during the day to keep things flexible. The home front work
items have slowed down a bit which make me think again that working sucks.
Hell I am retired, aren't I?
But on the positive side the wife and I have not had a break from each
other since October so this is giving her some needed breathing room and
a time out for me as well.
|
|
Mar 23
Nothing much to report except the paint job is completed, the home looks
great, and the customer was very happy with the work. I helped do
a lot of distressed work on the cabinet doors and staircase rail
banisters.
|
 |
Example of some of the work in progress. I still had to install
all the cabinet doors but this gives you an idea of the distressed paint
job. All the lines on each of the drawers and doors was hand
sanded. ouch.

|
This was a kind of lazy weekend. I mainly rested up but did muster
up the energy to replace one ceiling fan in the kitchen. This was
badly needed since the old one looked terrible. I have an extra
day off today before I start helping on another job tomorrow. We
have a good solid lead on a couple of 55 gallon plastic barrels for $10
each. Hopefully they are chemical free and I can use them for my
compost project. May even look at using a couple more for rain
barrels especially with the droughts we will most likely get down here.
We have another lead on a large hotel chain that is remodeling and they
have some nice ottomans that do not match the new decor. At $15 a
piece we are going to look at them with the possibility of
reupholstering a couple of them for our use. Besides getting our
tax paperwork into our accountant, finding a couple more white painting
pants, and getting my teeth cleaned we have a full day today. Did
I say I had it off? |
|
MAR 26
The past three days have been spent prepping and painting. It is
nice not having to arrive at work until 9:30. Always being an
early bird make this different especially with not being in charge and
having to deal with all the supervisor/manager type issues. I
still am up early but my early routine is my quality time.
This is the original job that I was asked to help with and it will
probably be the last for awhile. The owner of the company wants me
to go full time but is willing to take what ever time I am willing
to help. Being in the painting business you don't normally get
someone with my demeanor walking in your door. I have not
forgotten how to work and put in a good days worth of work.
Painters and painter laborer is a different type personality and blame
all there issues on paint fumes. hehe LOL. Not to pat myself on
the back or to trash painters, that is not my intent with that humor
statement. With all due respect, it is probably
one of the hardest, labor intensive, low paying, no benefits work I have
ever encountered. I tip my hat to all you painters, you are
awesome and make this world look great with a new fresh look. You
Rock. Performing this work is one thing, but just learning this
trade takes a very special person with a lot of love for their work.
Dirty jobs show should look at this type work for an upcoming segment.
|
Not to bore you, but I wanted to give you an idea of what is coming up
in the next couple days. Check out the ceiling. Check out my
boss in the doorway. Ok, when I said check her out I meant her
heights to the heights of the ceilings. We will be bringing in the
tall ladders. As you can see, each room same heights. When I
took these pictures I needed the telephoto lens.
We will finish up two bedrooms, bathroom, and hall today then move on to
new heights. LOL
Ceiling work rolling paint builds up pecks.
Ceiling work, white paint & white hair blends well together.
I did manage to get the lawn mowed the day before yesterday and we went
out to dinner at our favorite Mountain Mike's Pizza Restaurant last
night. |
 |
Mar 27
I am going to take a break from my site for a while as I don't want to
bore you writing about the paint job every day or so. I did a lot
of taping and caulking yesterday. I am getting so good at laying
down a thin line, finger wipe one direction, than small finger finish
wipe to perfection in the other direction that I will be able to finish
off the caulking of our own tub surround like a professional here very
soon. Since we are not using this shower for now it is good
getting the experience before caulking it. Caulking can be messy
and experience is good for quality applications. Who said you
can't teach an older dog new tricks.
Taxes are in our accountants hands and a new home owner insurance policy
has been purchased. Recommend you all call around and research for
rates as we just saved approx. $250 by switching, and got us a better
policy. Weather has been in upper 70's and really nice. Lots
of new growth everywhere. I need to get onto building my redwood
planters real soon since weather supports gardens now.
A little blurt about California and I am out of here for a bit.
Don't move here unless you are in love with the weather. Taxes,
cost of living, and overall population are large and keep going up.
We are not regretting the purchase of our home and the renovation as we
still see it still as a good investment. Birds still fly south.
LOL. Being retired helps to deal with the population on the
highways, cost of living is a minimal issue for us as we are very frugal
and can supplement our income when we want via the population of goods
in this area. Property taxes stay the same once you purchase a
home, it is locked in. The other taxes are controlled by limiting
our purchases from stores to craigslist and garage sales since they have
not figured out how to tax that yet. So we are well diversified
with minimal impact overall. Positive items, retired, heat,
retired, gardening, and retired. Thanks for your time, you can
have it back now. Take care all |
